St. Maarten

This was my first flight to St. Maarten. I had been here before on a cruise (1996 maybe?)

Anyway, the primary purpose of this trip was to obtain one picture for the Non-Rev Challenge. And here it is:

We stayed at the Sonesta Maho Beach resort, right by the airport. There is a great bar and restaurant called the Sunset Bar and Grill just on the beach, where they post times of the arriving aircraft. As you can see, they fly right over the beach just before they land on the adjoining runway.

Los Angeles

Quick trip to Los Angeles to get another item on the non-rev challenge. Flew in, hung out with my buddy Corey and got this pic on Hollywood Boulevard:

Moab, UT

Saturday morning, I left San Antonio and flew to Salt Lake City where I connected to Grand Junction, Colorado. My ultimate mission was to drive to Moab, Utah, to get a picture of me with "The Delicate Arch."

Moab was a couple of hours by car from Grand Junction, but the drive was beautiful I checked into the Hampton Inn after driving around looking for a hotel with vacancies. I drove out to the national park that evening and looked up at the stars. Out in the middle of the dessert with no artificial light, the sky was absolutely amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a more amazing celestial sight. The next morning, I was in Arches National Park by 7:00 am. It was about 50 degrees, and a beautiful day. I wore my Indian Kurta, since I had only packed three kurtas as I'd planned to be in India.

When I took the above picture, I was alone in the dessert. I was startled by a loud sound--it turned out to be a bird flapping its wings. More sights from Arches National Park:

Getting to the Delicate Arch required driving through the national park for about 15 miles or so, then a hike of a mile and a half, all up hill. Just after this high narrow path,

I finally came to the object of my journey:

You can't really get the perception of how big it actually is, until you see me standing underneath it:

San Antonio, TX

Friday night, I intended to leave Atlanta to visit India for my fourth time. I had been every fall for the past three years, and was really looking forward to a nice visit with Nameeta and Ajay.

As the travel gods would have it, it was not to be that evening. After careful thought, I decided I should go to Texas to take a picture of the Alamo for the non-rev challenge, then try to fly somewhere else out west for more points.

It was a short visit. I walked around a bit the night I got in, and again the next morning. I had been here before, but had never been inside the Alamo as the lines had been too long before. This time, I got to go inside. I also checked out some of the local arts and crafts as they were having a craft show along the Riverwalk.

I love riding the boat down the riverwalk. I didn't do it this time, but the last time I was here (when I stayed in The Menger, the haunted hotel) I remember being on the boat and thinking that San Antonio was absolutely charming. And one doesn't say that about Texas, usually.
