I spent Memorial Day weekend in Alaska. While that might seem like a quick trip for Alaska, you can really pack in a lot of sightseeing when you have 22 hours of daylight. I left Atlanta on Friday afternoon with Smita, Jonathan, and John and arrived in Anchorage at 6:30 pm—giving us a full night in Anchorage.
After checking into the Sheraton downtown, we walked down to Humpy’s where we sat outside. I had Alaskan king crab legs and a halibut taco. After dinner we stopped by a fun bar called Kodiak, where we spent the remainder of the evening, meeting a lot of eclectic locals.
The next morning we awoke early to begin the drive to Seward, Alaska. It was about a two hour drive, but we enjoyed breathtaking scenery, and even saw a caribou on the ride down. We also stopped a number of times to soak up the views.
Along the way, we stopped in Moose Pass Alaska, where Smita got some breakfast at a little country store.
When we got to Seward, we went to the Docks to catch a cruise on the Star of the Northwest.
The cruise featured an all you can eat salmon and prime rib dinner, and we sailed for about six hours through the fjords, spotting lots of bald eagles, mountain goats, porpoises, humpback whales, puffins, and sea lions.

After the cruise, we headed to the little downtown area of Seward, where we had dinner at Thorn’s Showcase Lounge.
Other hangouts that evening were Yukon Bar, and Tony’s Bar and Health Club as we waited for it to finally get dark.
The next morning we had breakfast at the Marina Restaurant, where I had caribou patty and eggs and Smita had reindeer sausage.
After breakfast, we headed back towards Anchorage at a leisurely pace, stopping many times to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. At Portage Glacier, we took a nice long walk on the Blue Ice Trail. This stop had some of the most stunning scenery of the trip.
For lunch, we stopped at Alyeska Resort, where we took a tram to the top of the mountain for more awesome views. The smoked salmon soup was tasty!
